BEFORE/AFTER – Our Powder room

Share This:

When we bought our Spanish ranch rambler in the hills above LA it had not been renovated since it was built in 1967.

The house was a mysterious blend of mid century and Spanish and had 60’s wallpaper and old carpeting still intact. It had retro accents and a cool vibe but was screaming for a major makeover.

The first room I tackled was our living room powder room.

It looked like this when we moved in.

I set forth to infuse it with a retro Palm Springs look.

Since we had just moved from the east coast to a warm climate all things tropical really spoke to me.

The powder room re imagined in my Palm Springs, Spanish, Art deco tropical vibe turned out like this.

I added a tropical wallpaper Cole & Sons Palm leaves.

I wanted tropical leaves everywhere!

I switched out the faucets for Kohler purist faucet  and added an Art Deco style mirror.

I re tiled the floor with a pretty Spanish Cement tile

Painted the cabinet a high gloss color and added modern door pulls.

The inside of the cabinet I painted black.

I selected a modern pendant with gold finish inside.

Added two mid century inspired 60’s glam wall sconces to stay true to the era of the house.

I kept the marble counter top and refinished the sink.

The new floor made the room.

This is the Cement tile we used.

The sink was an ugly yellow….

But since I love to reuse and I wanted to keep the marble top I decided to stain it.

After we had it refinished it looked like this..

…it turned out better than I had hoped.

I love the vibrant gold color on the Kohler purist faucet .The finish is vibrant matte gold.

I used these faucets in most of the house.

This angular pendant was the last piece of the puzzle..

My favorite design style is Art Deco so adding an Art deco style mirror felt right.

Here is a full mood board with colors with links to where you can buy  products I used if you are inspired to steal the steal the look!

Five dorm room looks

Share This:

It’s that time of year when moms walk around with a lump in their throats preparing their kids for the beginning of their grown up life – college. It’s a day I’m personally already dreading!

Luke is sixteen but I can already be in a puddle of tears just thinking about it.  I’m well aware it’s also an exciting time and all change brings positives, but that still doesn’t make it less difficult. In hopes to help make the transition for moms (and dads) a little easier I created some fun affordable dorm room looks.

My dear friend Bobbi and her daughter Bella are in full force preparing her dorm room.

Bella is going off to college in Boston to study communications and preparing for life across the country is scary yet exciting for both.

Bella and her room mate have already agreed to a gray and white dorm room theme. I think we underestimate the effect interiors can have on us so depending on what you are looking to become/achieve/feel while at college I think can already be represented in your dorm room decor.

Here is a grey/white suggestion for Bella and her roommate…

Rug // Desk chair // Headboard // Desk Lamp // Nightstand

Sheet Set // Ivory faux fur pillow // Asphalt Mark Pillow

Personally couldn’t survive living in a boring room where all the furniture is the same and the walls are white. If it was me I would go all out! (watch out Luke…)   I know most colleges won’t let you paint the walls, however some allow it as long as you paint it back.

I don’t know what you are setting out to become, but here are a few really affordable dorm room looks to can help guide you.

Retro Desk Lamp //   Panel Headboard   //    Black Lucky Duvet and Shams

African Mud Cloth Pillow  //    Grey Faux Fur Pillow  //    Rug

Future marine biologist?

Upholstered Headboard //  Ivory Faux Fur Pillow //  Turquoise Key Shams

//  Rope Desk Lamp  // Rug//  Nightstand

The next culinary entrepreneur?

Upholstered Headboard  //   Sheet Set  //  Black Bang Bang Euro Shams  //   Blush Faux Fur Pillow

Desk Lamp  //  Black and White Cowhide  //  Yellow Nightstand

A career in medicine, curing future illnesses?

Upholstered Headboard //  Grey Faux Fur Pillow //   Powder Pink Deco Shams

Nightstand //  Rug   // Desk Lamp

New renovation! A tropical spa area

Share This:

I love taking spaces that seem to be of no use and turn them in to something special. Every home has areas indoors as well as outdoors that just feels like wasted square footage.

Clients tell me all the time about hallways, corners, nooks that they simply never use and have a millions of reason why. The only reason why someone never uses an area is 1) because its not designed or 2) It’s not designed right. When a space is fun or welcoming and has a use, people will go there.

At the far corner of our ranch house against the hill there is a just such a space. It’s a small terrace area with a storage cabinet, a fence and an ugly air vent. It is however right off the master bedroom so my boyfriend suggested one day….why not add a hot tub? The hot tub mention inspired me to create a little California surfer paradise spa area.

Here is where we started….

We decided to start by adding a ficus hedge long the side of the space to create privacy.

As you can see on the picture the neighbors on the street below can see straight up, so the corner will get tall banana leaf plants and a ficus hedge will go from the corner of the yard all the way up to the master bedroom.

First step was  removing the storage bin and chain link fence.

Besides a mid century sofa I envisioned a cool space with a hanging chair.  I found a bunch of cool affordable hanging chairs at Pier 1. World market had the other items I needed for the sanctuary.

Jill Sorensen spa area

There is also an exterior bathroom on this side which will be spruced up. It will  need lights etc.

Ficus hedge has now been planted.

Facing this direction up the hill (picture below)  I will try to reuse some iron fencing that will be removed from the garage renovations.

The air vent outdoors I thought I would cover with an Artificial ficus hedge.

I have never tried it but I’ll give it a try. Have you?

Hot tub arrival!

Here it is so far – not too exciting, but it will be.

I’m planning on using these vintage retro surfboards you can get on Etsy to cover the wall.

Here are the sources for the spa items I purchased.

Lucky you if you like them because now they are already 50% off!

Can;t wait to see how this will turn out!

Bedroom Design Ideas – with Chairish!

Share This:

Recycling. A  subject close to my heart.

When you purchase a new piece of furniture no matter how nice it is, the second it arrives in your home it starts to lose value. Then when you move, redecorate, down size as life continually changes, its always a real pain to try to figure out how to sell your pieces, even if they are in perfect shape.  Whatever doesn’t get sold, or donated, ends up in landfills.

When Chairish contacted me to design a style board around a chair I was thrilled to be introduced to their site. It’s a popular easy to use site where you can buy or sell used pieces in perfect condition. I was so excited to discover them that I designed a bunch of our Jill Sorensen Lifestyle bedrooms design ideas with all vintage pieces.

The first one is The Kelly Suite, a mid century room in lavender and kelly green.

Chandelier //Wallpaper //Headboard // Bedding // Lamp // Carpet // Chair // Side tables // Pillow

Accent paint colors : BlackAntelope CanyonAmazon Moss

Sand Dune Maze Cotton Carpet.

I’m in love with lavender and Kelly at the moment.

The second look is a Retro Renegade look for someone in need of some downtown earthy spunk. And for someone who does his/her own thing.

Accent paint colors : Pink- Light Mint

One day I must design a hotel with themed suites, what a dream!

P.S. I’m participating in the popular One Room Challenge, making over a room in 6 weeks. The first week starts this Wednesday. Stay tuned!

In honor of Lauren Bacall’s life I designed the next Bedroom design Idea using her as inspiration.

She was perhaps the most beautiful, and most copied movie star of all time.  Her cool stare, side swept hair and deep voice left a strong impression on all off us. Whether the “look” was imagined by the studios or it was her own style, I don’t know, but it’s as iconic as it gets.

So for a modern Bacall inspired bedroom –BETTY BACALL BEDROOM DESIGN IDEA – it would have bamboo , natural fibers , yellows and of course black and white.

I also created a bedroom design idea around Jayne Mansfield.

But re imagined all her pink with an earthy vibe…EARTHY MANSFIELD BEDROOM DESIGN IDEA.

An earthy pink palace with some vintage glam.

Any suggestions on who else it would be fun to create bedrooms around?

Tropical leaves, old Hawaii, and mid century designs inspired this weeks bedroom design look – TROPICAL RETRO.

Leaves are on my mind, as I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of my very first sheet samples. We created a wallpaper in a larger version of the pattern for this look in anticipation of it.

The most important part of a room, in my mind starts with a color scheme. This color palette can be used as an all over color scheme for the room, or these paint colors can be used as wall, trim or ceiling color and also to repaint some existing pieces in your room.

Lily Headboard in Black velvet

Anchoring the room with black is key in this look. And a tall curvy headboard adds to the stateliness.
